This was an extremely enjoyable catch, ledgered single grain of sweetcorn on a size ten hook,8lb line with a salmon spinning rod, over half an hour to put on the bank,a splendid spawned out male common of 15kgs-and wild to boot !!!,a memorable catch

Not nit picking mate but that doesnt look like a crucian to me?
Have you got a better photo of it?

cracking fish!
the only conclusive way to determine if its a pure crucian is to get a DNA test,in my view if it looks like one its good enough!

This is from a slightly different angle-but it's definately a crucian,I've had dozens up to 1kg800 from the same spot, they're not quite the same as British crucians,if anything they're a bit rougher looking and not quite as pretty, definately not a cross though,I'll put up a cross/hybrid in the next post.

This is a crossed fish-obviously a male, judging by the milt dripping from it's anal fin,but what type of cross ?????????
I've a good idea which I'll keep in reserve until you lads have had a go

It does look like a crucian in that pic,it looked a bit long and lean in the first one, nice fish anyway.
I caught one about 10 yrs ago and it must have weighed well over 4lbs,i didnt know what size they went to and casually mentioned it to a mate "cant have" he said "the records not that weight" personally i think it was probably a Brown Goldfish or hybrid im not that lucky.
Ill have a guess at Ide x crucian for the hybrid?

No Ides here Tyke, the mouth gives a good indication of one parent

Ok i didnt want to go for the "obviouse" but the back says "roach" and the mouth says "rudd"
The anal fin and dorsal got me a bit?

defo some rud in there ,how many scales on the lateral line?

I miss fishing..
Ever since I started working graveyard shift I stopped fishing. I am starting to recondition myself to stay up later after work, so that when I get my fishing license I will fish a few hours each morning I am able to.
I'll take my slingshot in case I run into something edible..

Ain't a clue bud,
I'd say half rudd, and going by the anal and dorsal fins-half snotty

froggy i thought hybrids were infertile?
for 3 ingrediants one would already be a hybrid, therefore infertile?

I think ive misunderstood that post?
Are you saying its a rudd/bream no crucian involved?
Funnily enough if thats the case i thought the tail fin was very crucian like,i get dafter as i get older.

I'm pretty much convinced that it's a first cross Rudd/Bream-whether it's fertile or not is anyone's guess ----------------- ?????

Ive caught a lot of roach/bream hybrids and they dont seem to have so much colour as the one in the pic,i think youre probably right rudd/bream,
Supposedly hybrids are infertile or thats what ive read, but if yours is leaking milt who knows? maybe its evolution in progress and the odd one can reproduce and will eventually breed a new species, its got to happen somehow.
I targeted bream on a local water a few years ago,i wasnt sure of the size but thought it was worth a try,i couldnt get through the roach/bream hybrids because of their much more aggressive feeding, after 2 weeks effort the bailiff told me it was a waste of time the hybrids were actually bigger than the true bream, obviously the feeding competition.

Infertile doesn't mean asexual. Triploid rainbows still produce roe on occasion when the conditions are right - but they have an extra chromosome so, even if they're 'fertilized', nothing hatches.

I'd go along with that Adam, crossing of species will still produce males and females, which should at the right time, come into breeding condition and subsequently produce milt/roe---- whether in certain X's (goldfish/common carp) their offspring could be fertile I don't know, but certainly common carp breed with mirror carp and produce young with the characteristics of one parent or the other----I've always presumed they were fertile ??
