wth a perch live bait that size your not gonna catch a perch
So only having two weeks left till I move up to the highlands of scotland to start my new job at a fish farm the plan was to get as much bass fishing done as possible, unfortuantly things dont always go to plan,
halfway to the swale at 11pm to catch the 1am tide (where we were planning to do a spot of bass fishing) my defender 90 vered to the other side of the road, after thinking id hit something or had a flat tyer pulled over to find nothing, after assuming that the brakes were binding we limped onto the destination as the time we were fishing would allow the breaks to cool down and as my dad lives quite near so he could have a look at it after we had finished fishing, so the fishing wasnt great, there was 4 of us, we had two beach casters set up and out into the middle of the shipping channel and all were using spinning rods and naff all fish!
now to get to this mark ivolves going down a long narrow dirt track, as i was turning round at 2:30 to head back the bearings on my drivers side front tyre sheered off and the result was i was left with a 3 wheeled defender 90 and it looked expensive to say the least, now after calling out the rac at 2:30 they didnt arrive till 5am, and had a job getting it onto the lorry got back at 5:30 and landy had to be droped off at my house as it was too late to take it to a garage, so the neighbours were left talkin about that very muddy 3 wheeled landrover in the middle of the road (at least it couldnt be called a chelsea tractor)
so anyway getting back on plot the folllowing days were spent socializing
and seeing old friends on saturday the defender was taken to the garage
and then monday morning came the quote!
£700!!!
apparently the break disc and the entire part of the sub axel needed replacing
anyway car-less for the next 2weeks (by which time id be up in scotland)
so anyway with limited travel options i decided to hit the river on my doorstep the medway, running through medway the plan was to meet up with frazer and spin and live bait for the pike. but first we needed to catch some live baits so after grabbing half a pint of maggots we headed down to a little spot near the archbishops palace
when we got there we float fished single red maggot on size 14 hooks, as we set up two kids and there mother turned up these kids could be discribed as as red neck as could be and the reason why incest is illegal, as soon as i hook into a fish and land it and frazer did the same they come right over and cast over are lines, the ironic thing is that although me and my mate are nailing them a fish a chuck these kids are blanking, after 15minutes i got so pissed of at these kids that after this kid got tangled up in my line once more i said do you mind, and after a murmerd sorry he got the hint and stopped it
with tiddler bashing gettin boring and enough live baits we headed onto the medway proper, i was fishing a bleak live bait, and frozen salmon parr i had brought back from scotland on work experience and frazer fishing double maggot
the result was frazer getting a 1/4lb perch as well as the usal small stuff
and unfortuantly no luck on ther live bait or the salmon parr,
headed to another spot to do a bit extra bit of tiddler bashing and out came a ruffe! now these are extremely rare in the medway and the first time id actually seen one
another one up for frazer but to be fair i was getting alot of small stuff just not anything larger or unusal!
now boyd up with the ruffe of the day before we headed out again yesterday on are way to nicks tackle to grab another half pint of maggots, we came across to lads spinning for pike, they were pike novices and angling novices come to that, with both me and frazer having a passion for predator fishing we said they could come along with us, as if they were to land a pike and there are quite a few 20lb + fish in this stretch of the medway they wouldnt have a hope in hell of landing it especially as there plan was to chin in and didnt have a net with them.
anyway we headed to a mark frazer had noticed on the train from maidstone to tunbridge between maidstone and teston, so we thought wed take these lads along as it looked very pikey!, after no success with spinning for a couple of hours we decided to set up some live baits so in went the floats and maggots and out came a 3inch perch which was promptly nailed to a live bait rig and chucked back in, and a little dace on the other live bait rod, we also put a lobworm on one rod for any larger perch roaming about and the 4th rod had maggot to catch live baits, things were looking bleak not much action on the live baits of the lob worm untill about an hour to the end where the perch went under. but missed whatever went for it, the 3inch perch was still in a useable condition,
one of the 14yearolds lads asked frazer if he would catch perch on the perch live bait, frazers response was that the perch live bait was to big for perch in this river. 10mintures later the perch live bait went zooming off we let one of the lads strike it and land it and out came a 2lb perch
the kid was happy as larry as this was the biggest perch he'd ever seen let alone caught, unfortuantly it had a wire trace coming out of its vent, after obviously being caught and lost, which would explain the extremely low weight of the fish for the size of it as i have seen 4lb perch which have been that size,
as the fish had little chance of surving that long with the trace blocking its vent we decided to knock it on the head, and is now in my freezer ready for me to take up to scotland and mount
i have a feeling that kid is going to be on about that perch for weeks and weeks, and although i blanked that day was good to see the kids eyes light up!
but the plan this evening is to catch some perch live baits and try and catch this chaps sister!
