but very elusive to see......... shame he met such a bad end
squirel killer

thats a shame ide like to have a tame one to hunt squirrels lol
Yeeharr

They're only in the Highlands, Grampian and Southern Scotland. There may be some left in Northumberland. This one was one of many I saw dead on the road in Rhodes, Greece. They have loads there in the forests.

I'd have had the skin and skull if I didn't have to pack them in my suitcase!!!

You sure that's a pine martin bud ?looks a bit light in colour to me,was it a female cos it looks like it was suckling young

yehaar i hate to upturn the basket but its actually a beech martin (Martes foina) hense the lighter colour.the pine martins (Martes martes) chest patch is yellow to insome cases orange and a solid patch, the beech martins patch is devided partly by a body colour stripe.intrestingly the cretan form of the martin known at a cretan martin has virtually no white chest patch .  the beech martin is less shy than out pine martin and will often be found in and around barns and outhouses where it will nest, apparently they dont like the trees as much as the pine martin either and prefer disiduous woodland over  pine.
as for domesticating them ,apparently its possible here is a pic of one rescued whilst a kit and trained to use a harness:

It would seem that a huge number are killed on the roads in their area of coverage.

Yep, it's a beech martin. I didn't look to sex it or see if it was suckling as it was 28 degrees and had been dead at the side of the road for some time and it fecking stank. I've never seen a pine martin in the flesh and to be honest colour variations among mustelids are quite common due to differences in habitat etc. I've killed weasels that have been very light in colour to those that are nearly charcoal grey. So I wrongly assumed that it was a pine martin.

That one on the harness was extremely cool.  That would make the ultimate pet!  I remember seeing a reddish-coloured mink a few years ago whilst out fishing and thinking the same thing.

i recom most mustalids would train and be handleable,i read somewhere about a 19centuary trout and seatrout poacher who used an otter!
jmplsnt

The fellow who wrote "A Sporting Chance" also had one he bought from a Cajun family and taught it to be the ultimate retriever.  It could handle both ice and ducks that dived to evade dogs with equal aplomb.

we have  got a pet skunk now but its too fat to get in a harness at the moment
