I have made very few lures like "Tomics" , wasn't too satisfied with their action for piking .
I am not familiar with the other lure , that you've mentioned , but I assume , that it might similar to a "Tomic" ,..... just the typical downrigger trolling plug for salmon with a plane or slightly cupped headplane ????
If you have a lathe , these are not that difficult to turn down , a disc sander takes care of the angled headplane , with a "Dremel" multitool you could furnish a cupping onto the headplane .
I have once made one like that for swapping ,.... that one even had the typical bore from center of head plane down to the belly to be able to rig the lure staight onto the mainline to prevent hook leverage .
You can carve these lures by hand as well from round wood dowels , but it takes care and some skills to keep it symetrically round all over it's length , ........but it definately does work , though takes considerably longer , off course !

I dont have a lathe to make them, the kynoch is similar in shape to the tomics but like you mentioned the mainline runs rite through it to avoid the leverage issue. They are basically like the salmon plugs for downrigging you said, J plugs for example. Would be good to see a pic of the one you made for swapping if you had it.
