I dont have any experience with long dogs but my dad's lab used to be a little rough when retrieving ducks so he took a piece of wood, drilled holes, and hammered a bunch of dowels through the wood, then he dipped the whole thing in liquid latex to soften it up more.

he spent a couple weeks working with the spikey dummy and it cured the dog right up.  the idea was not to poke the dogs mouth but to just be so awkward to pick up for the dog that he had to use a light touch. (the dog would try and use his lips and tounge more than his teeth to hold on to the spikey dummy)  now that dog could retrieve a cupcake without messing up the frosting!!

i imagine that might be a little dangerous to try with long dogs since your dealing with such immense speeds, but maybe something similar could be thought up.

static

It was used here a long time ago,a peice of 2" x 2" with barbed wire wrapped round it and then stitched in a rabbit skin.
Sounds a bit barbaric but i dont think it was used to break hard mouthed dogs that effectively,it was used from the start so your pup never "chomped" in the first place.
