found chicken in the woods, about two meters up an old dead oak tree, pulled it off and was surprised at the weight (heavy) but sadly it was filled with grub like maggots

All of R. Phillips books  are the dogs danglers , When i was at college doing Arbor culture the tree and fungi book were are bibles and i still think they are the best never bettered. Over the years i have sold wild shrooms to the local restaurants for upto  £9 kilo but over the last 2 years it has been crap , chick of the woods was always a good earner ,it has to be picked young the size of a grapefruit before it goes to Woodie i have seen them bigger than a portable tv . If it is you can still use it by simmering in stock to soften , i like it best fried in bacon fat with some duck eggs but really it should picked when it is nice and young .Before
someone asks yes it does taste a be like chicken and when it comes to his sister Hen of the woods dont bother it tastes of sh*t

Bullfrog, this year is turning out excellently up here at least, a phenomenal amount of ceps, and the first sizable haul of chanterelles in june.
